Dr. Asma Ibrahim is an archaeologist and curator from Karachi, Pakistan. She is often called ‘the first female archaeologist in Pakistan’ due to her perseverance in the male-dominated field. On the 29th of June 2021, an interview was held via Zoom (link here! and video below).
Initially completing her degree in microbiology, zoology, and chemistry, Dr. Asma first became interested in archaeology due to evolution.
‘… at vertebrates it suddenly discontinues. You don’t know what happens to chimpanzees… how the evolution of man occurred, so that was one of the curiosities I had… I asked my teacher [about evolution] but the teacher couldn’t answer… religions don’t let you answer such questions [about evolution, the teacher said].’
Upon entering archaeology, Dr. Asma did not feel as welcomed as she had hoped to be.
‘I went to the department of archaeology, but my dreams were totally shattered when the director general I met there said “there’s no place for girls, so you go back into something which girls are doing.” … so, he rejected me right there and then… I was really upset.’
Within archaeology, Dr. Asma focuses on human remains and, more broadly, the Indus Valley civilisation. When the opportunity to go on an excavation in Pakistan came about, Dr. Asma asked the department if she could join, but was once again rejected as she was a woman. Later, after gaining permission, she went to the Indus valley excavation site.
Now the director of the State Bank Museum in Pakistan, Dr. Asma continues to break barriers for South Asian women in archaeology, paving the way for the new generation.
